Behaviour Intervention

The Behaviour Intervention Team provides support to students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 with complex behaviour issues that manifest in poor social, emotional and academic functioning within the school environment. Consultation to Senior Years (SY) students with similar needs is also provided. The Behaviour Intervention Team uses a General Systems Theory Approach to understand and assess student needs and work collaboratively with other stakeholders to devise and deliver effective interventions. Services are provided on an individual, small group, class, school and/or community-wide basis in an effort to target specific student needs.
The Behaviour Intervention Team delivers a variety of professional development presentations to divisional staff during the school year with a goal to support and build capacity in school division staff and the greater community. Topics include student trauma, school refusal behaviour, ADHD, anxiety, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training. Innovative and tailor-made programming is also provided and developed collaboratively with school teams in order to meet the diverse needs of students with challenging behaviour. The team extends its work to include more targeted interventions at the parent and family systems level.
As part of an innovative programming initiative, several mental health presentations are conducted at schools to teach students about the symptoms of ADHD, Anxiety, ASD and how these conditions impact the lives of classroom peers. The goal is to provide empathy training and share information about a student’s particular mental health diagnosis. These presentations are designed to promote inclusion by demystifying the associated symptoms and building peer empathy for the student affected. As well, Roots of Empathy are provided to build empathy and prosocial skills.
Interventions and supports by the Behaviour Intervention Team include:

  • Direct observation and consultation by the Behaviour Intervention Resource Teacher;
  • Collaboration with school teams, caregivers and outside agencies to develop positive student plans focusing on behaviour, socialization and communication;
  • Provision of support during the initial implementation of student plans, progress monitoring and ongoing consultation as needed;
  • Provision of support in the development and implementation of proactive school-wide program plans and professional development opportunities to build capacity among school staff members to support students with behavioural needs.
