June 13, 2018

Each year, the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) presents four awards to young global citizens across the province enrolled in the Global Issues: Citizenship and Sustainability course. This year, two students groups from St. James Collegiate were honoured to receive two of the four MCIC Outstanding Take Action Awards for 2018.

On June 12, St. James Collegiate students (from the left) Nicole R., Kira E., Paolo R. and Aaleigha C. were presented two Take Action awards at the Annual MCIC General Meeting. Their global issues teacher, Ms. Tuchscherer, also attended the meeting to see her students be recognized for their hard work and contributions within the school. The award is comprised of a $250 cash prize, a certificate and a public recognition at a school graduation ceremony.  MCIC works with Manitobans who are concerned about building a better world. They believe that successful international development work goes hand-in-hand with efforts to build understanding of international issues within Manitoba. MCIC encourages dialogue on global issues and helps empower Manitobans to become active global citizens: individuals who understand that their actions here make a difference around the world. In alignment with those values and ambitions, the MCIC recognized two specific initiatives led by St. James Collegiate students this year.

St. James Collegiate students Paolo R. and Aaleigha C. collaborated to raise awareness about sexual harassment issues with a hallway installation surrounding the #metoo movement. Their project helped show how widespread these issues can be and encouraged others to learn more on the topic. Also presented with an MCIC Outstanding Take Action Award, Kira E. and Nicole R. worked together to raise the profile of sustainable lifestyles and promote waste reduction among their peers. Their project highlighted sustainable alternatives for daily needs and encouraged others to take action!

Congratulations to both Jimmie teams and to Ms. Tuchscherer!
