The EAL Support Team is a group of professionals with advanced preparation and experience in supporting English language learners. This team has the responsibility (i.e. providing instruction, serving as a resource to teachers) for the support of all students who speak English as an Additional Language from K-Gr.12.
The major roles of the EAL Support Teachers, each of which contributes to the improvement of student learning, are: initial intake, instruction, collaboration, assessment and leadership.
The EAL Support Teacher functions within the educational team to provide:
Assessment: to assist schools with the identification of EAL learners and to help them assess stages of English language acquisition
Support: to assist schools in the design of curriculum and specific language planning which will foster the development of language skills
Inservice: to provide workshops and inservicing to school staff, other professionals and parents with respect to EAL
Consultation: to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange of information
