May 07, 2021

To assist with keeping students active, The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association announced a new virtual basketball competition in April for all high school students. The three one-week challenges consisted of:

  • A 60 second Mikan Drill, which is a left-right alternating layup drill using a single ball (week of April 12)
  • A best of 20 free throw challenge (week of April 19)
  • A 60-second 3-point-shooting challenge (week of April 26)

With over 5,000 students participating, the St. James-Assiniboia School Division (SJASD) is delighted to recognize the St. James Collegiate high school and its students for winning the AAA Skills Challenge with 622 points. Dairy Farmers of Manitoba has also generously awarded $850 to the school's athletic department.

High schools submitted their top 5 boys and top 5 girls scores, combined into a single weekly score. Prizes and recognition were awarded to the top-scoring schools and the highest participating schools for each of the participation groups:

  • Overall Top Score Awards (4 total):
    • A school, AA school, AAA school, AAAA school
  • Highest Participation Awards (4 total):
    • A school, AA school, AAA school, AAAA school

"We are so proud of our school and everyone who participated," said Lorelei Steffler, St. James Collegiate Principal. "Virtual events such as this help promote physical activity and are important during the COVID-19 pandemic."

These activities help students' mental health, encourage them to stay active in creative ways during these difficult times, and invite students who may not usually participate in school sport to benefit from the engagement.

Congratulations, St. James Jimmies!
