School Protocols Parents Guide

What to do...

If your child is sick:

  • Students are to stay home from school if they are sick, no matter how mild the symptoms.
  • Screen for COVID-19.
  • If the individual is still sick after 24 hours, get tested for COVID-19 and isolate awaiting test results.
  • If the individual is still sick after 24 hours and choses not to be tested for COVID-19, they are required to isolate for 10 days, and be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.

If your child is awaiting a COVID-19 test result:

  • Isolate at home and do not attend school until you receive the test result.
  • If the test is negative for COVID-19, the student may return to school once they are symptom free for 24 hours.
  • If the test is positive for COVID-19, Public Health will advise household members of isolation requirements.  Notify the school Principal of the student's positive COVID-19 test result.

If one child is sick, but other family members (siblings) are not sick:

  • If household siblings are not sick with symptoms, and they have not been directed by Public Health to isolate (quarantine) due to being determined a close contact, they may attend school.

If a child is determined a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case:

  • Close contacts who are required to self-isolate (quarantine) for 10 days are recommended to go for testing at day 7 after their last exposure to the case, or if symptoms develop.
  • Regardless of whether the close contact tests negative, they must complete their 10 days of self-isolation (quarantine).
  • If the person is symptom free after 10 days, they can attend school but must continue to self-monitor for 4 days.

If a child is a close contact and develops symptoms of COVID-19:

  • If the close contact develops symptoms of COVID-19, they are to go for a COVID-19 test.
  • The whole household is to isolate (quarantine) pending the test result.
  • Contact Public Health immediately for further isolation (quarantine) direction.
