Over 1,200 SJASD students vote in mock municipal and school board elections

October 26, 2022

studentvote_6_webbanner.jpgTwelve schools located in SJASD including the MRLSS and InformNet will “elect" their Mayor, City Councillor and School Trustee today thanks to Student Vote, a civic education program run by CIVIX. The charitable organization helps teachers and students hold mock elections across the country.

CIVIX expects over 1,200 students in SJASD will cast their ballots. Across Manitoba, they expect about 15,000 students to participate in similar mock elections. Student Vote programming is designed to engage students from grades 4 to 12.

Mock election results will be available sometime after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. Results will be searchable by school so students will be able to see their own school results and compare it to other schools.

Outreach Officer Ruth Matthew says while CIVIX provides teachers with ballot boxes, screens ballots, and lesson plans, it's the students that organize and run the elections, serving as deputy returning officers, polling clerks and scrutineers. “In essence, it's a mock election to help increase voter turnout in the future," she says.

Students do their own research on candidates and then get other students out to vote. Both students and teachers have been preparing for this election since late September.

“It's important because in a few short weeks (students) are able to make important decisions for themselves (about candidates) and they are proud of the research they put into it."

This is the third time Student Vote has held mock municipal elections in SJASD. They've also organized seven federal and two provincial elections in the Division.

Congratulations to all the students and educators that have participated in this important civic initiative.
