Congratulations to École Voyageur music teacher Leanne Cooper-Carrier for being named the winner of the 2022 Frances Seaton Choral Composition Competition for her piece Refraction.
Refraction was composed during the pandemic, and addresses both the technical challenges of choral singing while artistically depicting the isolation of that time.
According to the Manitoba Choral Association, “the main theme begins simply with one voice and is then tossed around, expanded, broken down and stressed until it finally comes to a simple but unresolved end. Much like the pandemic experience, in the song each singer's unique loneliness mixes together to form a sort of group loneliness. The bowed vibraphone (an orff instrument in the metallophone family) sets the song further on edge by adding layers of beauty mixed with tension."
Congratulations Leanne on this outstanding accomplishment!
