Honouring Mazina Giizhik (The One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky), The Honourable Murray Sinclair

November 05, 2024

DSC_0659_square.jpgFrom Nov. 5 to 9, 2024, all schools and buildings in SJASD lower flags to half mast in recognition of the passing of Mazina Giizhik (The One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky), The Honourable Murray Sinclair. Sinclair served the people as a former Senator, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and Manitoba Justice. Flags will remain lowered until sunset on November 9, 2024.

As the first Indigenous person to be named to the Manitoba provincial court and the Court of Queen's Bench of Manitoba in 1988, Murray Sinclair was already an inspiration to all Manitobans.

As the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada from 2009 to 2015, he brought Canada's painful history of Residential Schools to light for all Canadians. The six-volume final report and 94 Calls to Action will continue to guide Truth and Reconciliation efforts in education and other facets of society for generations to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, the members of Peguis First Nation, and anyone in the SJASD community and beyond that is impacted by this tremendous loss.
