On April 12, more than 475 students from across the province gathered at Red River College to compete in the 2018 Skills Manitoba Competition.
A total of 25 students from Collège Sturgeon Heights Collegiate (CSHC), one student from St. James Collegiate and one student from Jameswood Alternative School represented St. James-Assiniboia School Division at the event.
All students demonstrated creativity, dedication and knowledge in their respective fields and showcased their ability to perform well under pressure. On behalf of the Division, we would like to congratulate all participants on their hard work. With 42 skilled trades and technology contests spanning six industry sectors, SJASD students competed in the following categories: 2D Character Computer Animation, 3D Digital Game Art, Cooking, Electrical Installation, Electronics, Graphic Design, Hairstyling, Job Search, Job Skill Demonstration, Mobile Robotics, Photography, Public Speaking, Video Production, Web Design and Development and Welding.
The philosophy of the Skills Competition, according to the Skills Manitoba website is to “reward students for excellence, directly involve industry in evaluating student performance and keep training programs relevant to employers’ needs."
A total of 14 SJASD students medalled at the event, 13 from CSHC and one from Jameswood Alternative School. Collectively, our Division earned five Gold, five Silver and four Bronze medals as listed below:

Four Gold medal finalists - Vitina S., Shannon W., Megan P. and Aqil M. - will be moving on to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition, taking place in Edmonton, June 4 to 5. Skills Canada is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country and we wish our students the best of luck
