Hello Bruce Families!

I hope this email finds you all enjoying the final warm days of fall. The year has been going very quickly and I apologize for not sending emails more frequently. Please remember that Monday is another in-service day, so no school that day.

Congratulations to our September Students of the Month, who were celebrated at the beginning of October. Grade 6 and 7 students have received a certificate and a $20 gift card for Indigo/Chapters and Grade 8 students received a $25 gift card and certificate. Student pictures are write ups are posted outside the office. Congratulations to the following students:

Grade 6 – Bailey D, Jayden K, Stella T

Grade 7 – Daegan T, Tomisin S, Addison CB, Malik WT

Grade 8 – Ali M, Evan H, Vlada G

Parent-Teacher conferences will be held November 10th, 4-7pm. Conference manager to book appointments will open next week and is available from the school’s website. Appointments will be 10 minutes and in person. Parents can book appointments with multiple teachers.

With the cooler weather, we have shifted lunch hour so that students begin eating inside for 15 minutes and then play outside for the remainder of time. If a student is unable to eat their entire lunch in 15 minutes they are permitted to finish before going outside (though this affects very few students.) Please make sure your child is appropriately dressed for the weather.

The canteen is closed for snack time as it was a source of concern for many staff as it took students too long to make it to their next class on time. Instead, students have the option of a canteen cart that visits select classes each day on a rotational basis:

Monday - 6A and B

Tuesday - 6C and 8A

Wednesday - 7A and 7B

Thursday - 7C and 7D

Friday - 8B and 8C

We will begin pizza Fridays for the month of November. Orders will be taken on Thursday with delivery on Friday. Slices of pizza will remain $2 and a pop is $1.  Our first pizza day will be slightly different, as we will be joining in a fundraiser for Christmas Hampers through Sturgeon Heights. We will be providing each student one slice of pizza for November 9 free of charge as the proceeds will, in the end, help St. James families. Students can purchase a pop for $1 and order more slices of pizza for $3 if you would like them to, though those orders must be placed by November 4. Information on the fundraiser is at the end of the email.

Speaking of food and drink, students should have a reusable water bottle at school as we have run out of cups in the office. Students without a water bottle can now use the water fountain.

As you plan for Hallowe’en, please keep in mind some suggestions for costumes if they are to be worn at school. Please make sure they are school and age appropriate, which means not too scary, gross, revealing or leave behind a mess. Weapons are also not allowed at school. Some costumes come with “accessories” that may or may not be viewed as a weapon and in those cases, the administration will decide if they are appropriate. More information about Hallowe’en and coming Spirit Week will come out in the next email.

Have a great weekend!

From Sturgeon Heights:

My name is Belle S and I’m a student at Sturgeon Heights. My partner, Kyra T and I are participating in Pros vs Joes at Sturgeon. One of our fundraisers is selling Pizzas so we would like to propose a hot Pizza Lunch at Bruce for Wednesday, November 9th.

Why

We are a part of Pros vs. Joes at Sturgeon Heights which is a fundraiser dedicated to the Christmas hampers around St James. It consists of student pairs (Joes) competing to make it to the final which is a week-long tournament of Joes vs. professional and amateur athletes. We compete in amazing race style games as well as fundraising to make it to the final. One of the fundraisers is a pizza lunch. All funds from the pizza lunch would be going towards the hampers!

When

The pizzas will be delivered to Sturgeon prior to lunchtime. We would deliver the pizzas to Bruce. The lunch would occur Wednesday, November 9th. We would need the amount of pizzas and funds by Thursday, November 4th.

Details

The pizzas will be purchased from Little Pizza Heaven. 1 XL pizza will cost $24. That will work out to $3/slice for students. We are offering cheese, pepperoni and ham and pineapple pizzas. We will need to know how many whole pizzas you would need; we are not able to sell portion of pizzas.
