Weekly Notes From the Office

George Waters Middle School Notes from the Office April 12-16 , 2021

Covid-19 developments are continuing to evolve Winnipeg.

Recent developments in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta affirms that our journey with this virus is no where close to being over.

Thank-you for continuing your efforts in keeping our school and community safe.

I would like to remind everyone of how important it is to continue to follow updated Covid-19 protocols, including the monitoring of symptoms and household isolation requirements, when a positive case or close contact is identified in a household.

Updated public health directives include the following:

  1. The definition of a close contact has changed to identify more contacts. A close contact is anyone who has been in close physical proximity (less than two metres or six feet) for more than a cumulative total of ten minutes to a confirmed COVID-19 case over the course of a day. It also includes people who provided care for the case or had direct contact with infectious body fluids without the use of personal protective equipment.
  2. All household members are now considered close contacts. As well, a person would be considered a close contact if they had close face-to-face interactions with someone who has COVID-19 without the use of a mask, even if the interaction(s) was/were for less than a cumulative total of ten minutes.
  3. If public health officials identify a variant of concern (VOC) in a case, more aggressive measures for contacts will be implemented by public health officials.
  4. It is recommended that close contacts go for testing 10 days after their last exposure to the case. Regardless of whether the close contact tests negative, they must complete their 14 days of self-isolation (quarantine); however, household members of the close contact can end their self-isolation (quarantine) when the close contact tests negative, as long as the test has been done a minimum of 7 days after the exposure.
  5. If a close contact does not get tested for COVID-19, and the positive case is not a VOC, the household members of that person must isolate until the close contact completes the full 14 days of self-isolation (quarantine) and remains asymptomatic.
