Gator News- June 16, 2022

May 11, 2022

To our families of Golden Gate,

Yesterday we enjoyed our last Great Gator Celebration! It was our first together as a school for quite some time and it was nice to enjoy for a change! We are excited for our grade 8's as they head to high school and we had an opportunity to thank them for being wonderful ambassadors of our school the last 3 years! They will have the opportunity to see their new schools next Friday afternoon. We would also like to thank our staff members who will not be with us next year for everything that they do for our students and the school. We would like to wish Mr. Nickerson, Ms. Vendramelli, Mr. Wiebe and Ms. Engel all the very best for next year!

National Indigenous Day

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, and diverse cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Although these groups share many similarities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated on June 21, The Summer Solstice. For generations many Indigenous peoples have celebrated their culture and heritage on the day when the sun is at the highest point in the Northern Hemisphere, creating the longest and sunniest day of the year!

We will post on our website opportunities within our city to participate in National Indigenous Day activities.

 Flag Football

Next week our students who participated in flag football have a Flag Football Jamboree taking place at John Taylor Collegiate on Wednesday June 22nd from 4-6 pm. All permission forms have gone home to be returned by our Monday's deadline.

 News from the Music Room

Please return your Golden Gate rental instrument as soon as possible.

News from the Library

Please return any outstanding books to our library as soon as possible.

 Active Transportation

It is great to see the number of bikes on our bike rack every day. It seems like many students are participating in the Wheel Challenge Bingo which is exciting! Just a friendly reminder that helmets go a long way to protect our students from injury, and they are also required as city by-law. Students should also bring a lock to school for securing their bikes.

Year End Field Trips

This week will be an exciting week as we have our grade 6 and 7 field trips taking place. We met with all students to review expectations on our field trips as it has been an incredibly long time since we did one.

Visitor Parking

Parents/guardians please note that there is a visitor parking spot off Bruce Avenue. If you are dropping off your child late, dropping off your child's lunch or picking up your child for an appointment, please access the visitor parking spot as that is the purpose of the parking spot.

Transition Day

Our grade 8's will be visiting the high schools that they will be attending on June 24th from 1:30-2:30 pm. Field trip permission forms will be required to be completed and returned. Students will return to Golden Gate following the tours, where they may be dismissed, if returned permission forms grant that request.

Class Placements 2022-2023

Class placements are always a challenge for schools to try and make the best fit considering multiple variables when determining a class placement for any child. These decisions are best left with the school personnel, teachers, student services and administration. Next year we will continue to have 3 academic sections for our students going into grade 7, and our grade 8's next year due to numbers with students moving, etc., we will be at 3 academic sections from the current 4. Please see the class placement letter to learn more about the process of determining class placements at middle school, and how you can best be of support. Our tentative plans will be notifying students of their class placement through School Messenger at the end of the year.

 Bus Loop

Please note that the City of Winnipeg and Winnipeg Police Services have amended our sign for our Bus loop. The new times have been posted. Please note that there is no turning into the bus loop between 8 am and 4 pm. Thank you in advance for your cooperation, and please inform any other family member who may assist the family in drop off and pick ups to avoid any fines and demerits.

Recycling Program

We are collecting markers/highlighters as part of our recycling program to avoid having these items find their way into the garbage. If you have these items at home, please send them to the school with your child so that we can recycle them.
