2018-19 School News

March 06, 2018
School news.jpgA whole school year has passed so quickly! Time sure flies when you work hard!  We have had a wonderful school year. We encourage our students to take time now to reflect upon their academic accomplishments from the past school year. Our final assembly of the year will be held on Wednesday, June 28 at 11:00 am. All parents are welcome to attend.  To the Grade 5 students leaving us, we wish you continued success as you begin your Middle School journey. Good luck to the families leaving the Voyageur community.  There will be staff changes for the upcoming 2018-19 school year. We thank all the staff that are leaving Voyageur for their dedication to teaching Voyageur students these past years! As this school year draws to a close, we look forward to the changes, which will take place in the new school year.  Each year brings some changes in personnel, as some staff leave, and others transfer to opportunities at other schools. Mrs. Zurawzuk and Mrs. Ranson are retiring and we thank them for their years of service to the Voyageur School community.  We wish Ms. Stegmaier and Mr. Esteves all the best as they pursue opportunities in their teaching professions. After serving 11 years as the Principal of Voyageur School, Mrs. Lazar will be moving to Crestview School as their Principal. We wish all staff leaving Voyageur School the very best of luck with their career changes!

Just a couple of reminders: Thank you to the parents and caregivers for their continued home support. Thank you to the Voyageur Parent Council for their hard work to make Voyageur School that much better for all our students and their families. Please plan to attend the annual Voyageur Parent Council Family BBQ on June 14 from 4:00-6:00 pm.  Students should wear appropriate footwear to school. Flip flop type shoes are not safe for maneuvering stairs in our school or for playing on the structures on our playground.  With our lovely spring weather finally here, parents are reminded that their children may require hats and sunscreen in order to be “Sun Smart.”  Students are encouraged to drink water during the day and bring a labelled non-glass water container to ensure that they remain hydrated throughout the school day.  Parents are invited to join us at our year-end assembly on Thursday June 28 at 11:00 a.m., and report cards will be issued at 3:45 pm for grades 1-5. No report cards will be issued before this date and time.  Students who will not be in school on this date should provide an addressed envelope with sufficient postage or make arrangements with your child’s teacher if someone else will be picking up your child’s report card. Happy summer! Mrs. Lazar

Voyageur School 2018-2019 Class Configurations and Class Placement Process The end of the year is fast approaching, so we are already planning for next school year. In order to adjust to a decrease in school population, while continuing to be in line with the province’s class size mandate, our classroom configurations for the next school year are based on current enrolment projections. The following classroom configurations have been approved for the 2018-2019 school year:
Mrs. S. Kent  Principal
Mrs. L. McBride Administrative Assistant
Ms. K. Sourisseau .5 Kindergarten (AM) classroom    .5 Reading Recovery
Teacher Mrs. C. Cassell Grade 1/2 room 15
Mrs. F. Gallo  Grade 1/2 room 16
Ms. F. Vinci  Grade 3 room 23
Mrs. A. McDonald Grade 4/5 room 22
Mrs. K. DaSilva Grade 4/5 room 24
Mr. D. Vosper Phys. Ed. / Guidance
Teacher Mrs. C. MacKay Resource/Guidance Teacher
Mrs. C. Swart .5 pm Music Teacher

The purpose of the Class Placement Process is to maximize learning and teaching opportunities for all students and teachers by constructing balanced classes. The class creation process is a complex one involving the gathering of information about student needs and the making of collaborative decisions from staff and administrative teams about student placement in classes. Factors considered in these decisions include: academic progress, individual learning styles, and interactions between classmates, specific learning needs in different areas, gender balance, and information provided by the current teachers.  School organization and classroom make-up are also determined by many other factors: numbers of students registered in a grade, combinations of grades, and staff allocation.  Placing students is not an easy task and the professionals in our school invest a great deal of time and thought into the process. If you have information to share about your child, please speak with your child’s current teacher about your child’s needs. We value feedback, however; there is no guarantee that students will be placed per parental request. Our teachers work closely together in planning lessons with their grade level partners.  Please refrain from requesting that your child be “placed with” or “not placed” with a particular student.  Class list placements will be finalized and included with June report cards after this process has been completed. Thank you for your support as we strive to create the best possible learning environment for all of the students at Voyageur School.
