Welcome Back to School 2022-23

September 01, 2022

BacktoSchool2022_webnews.pngWe are pleased to welcome students and staff back to full-time, in person learning this fall. For those who are joining us as new students, parents, and staff, we extend a very a special welcome to the St. James-Assiniboia school community! We look forward to supporting our students to engage in a full range of activities as we focus on connecting and reconnecting with our learners, families, and communities. The past few years have been challenging; and we thank everyone for their ongoing support and partnership in working to keep our schools safe.

The health and safety of our students and staff remains a top priority. We continue to follow the guidance of public health officials and will notify staff, students and caregivers of any impacts or changes:

  • We continue to make ventilation improvements in schools.
  • Routine cleaning and disinfection protocols remain in place, with a focus on high-touch surfaces and common areas including washrooms.
  • At this time, mask use remains optional; masks are recommended for high-risk individuals and continue to be available for those who choose to take this precaution.
  • To start the school year, a small supply of masks and COVID-19 test kits will be available at each school. We encourage students, staff and guests who wish to wear masks to bring their own well-fitted masks into school facilities.
  • Schools will not be contact tracing; COVID-19 absences will be monitored by each school and any significant changes to attendance will be brought to the attention of Public Health.
  • In the event of school closures or other changing measures, schools will implement emergency plans as directed by Manitoba Public Health and Manitoba Education. For more information on this, please refer to the most current COVID-19 Guidance for Manitoba Schools.

Please carefully review and follow the COVID-19 fundamentals listed below. Be kind to each other. And remember, the best way to keep COVID-19 out of our schools is for everyone to stay home when sick. Families, please continue to screen your child for symptoms of COVID-19 and keep them home if they are feeling unwell.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to another year of learning and growing at SJASD!

COVID-19 Fundamentals
Schools will promote preventive measures that include:

  • Daily monitoring for signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Staying home when sick.
  • Frequent hand washing with easy access to hand hygiene products.
  • Practicing respiratory etiquette (i.e., covering coughs and sneezes).
  • Respecting individual choice regarding mask use; a limited supply of masks and rapid antigen tests will be available for staff and students if needed.

Isolating When Sick
Anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 and/or is ill with symptoms of COVID-19 should:

  • Isolate for 5 days after your symptoms started and until you have no fever and your other symptoms have improved over the past 24 hours.
  • If you don't have symptoms and test positive, isolate for 5 days after your test date.

It is recommended that individuals wear a mask in public for the remaining 5 days.
