Trustee Smukowich Reflects on the Importance of Looking Beyond Gifts and Decorations

December 04, 2025

BlurbfromtheBoard_Insta_CherylS_1080by1080_snowflake.jpgDecember is such a wonderful time in our schools with many activities and events that showcase our students' talents while celebrating the season. These events are always a highlight—thank you to everyone who's organizing and participating!

No matter how you celebrate—whether you're gathering with loved ones, honouring cultural or faith traditions, or volunteering in the community—the treasured time we spend with our family and friends carries us through challenging times and provides many of us with comfort and peace. Gifts and decorations are wonderful, but for most people, the holidays are about spending time with those you love. As Trustees, we hope you are able to prioritize quality time during the winter break, enjoying holiday traditions and creating lasting memories with family and friends.

One of the most memorable ways families can enjoy the holiday season is by sharing simple traditions. These don't have to be elaborate; often, the simplest traditions become the most treasured—decorating the tree while music plays in the background, baking a recipe that's been handed down for generations, or watching the same classic movie every year.

You and your family can enjoy the season by creating opportunities to volunteer together. The holidays can be lonely and stressful for many people. Spend time with an elderly neighbour, or a newcomer and their family. Our time and attention are among our most valuable assets. Volunteering at a local food bank, donating to a toy drive, helping at a local animal rescue shelter or community organization can help children and adults alike understand the deeper meaning of the season. These shared acts of kindness not only support the community but also instill the values of empathy and kindness in your children and provide them with a meaningful and rewarding experience.

May this festive season bring you peace, rest, and moments of celebration. We look forward to a bright and inspiring new year together!

Sincerely,

Cheryl Smukowich
