January is Wellness Month!

January 25, 2018

Great_Kindness_Challenge_logo.jpgJanuary is Wellness Month at Stevenson. We know that in order to be overall healthy, we need to have good emotional, mental and physical health. If one of those areas is lacking, then we are at risk of declining health in the other areas as well. It is very important that you reach out for help if you are feeling unhealthy in one of these areas. It is also very important that you help others if you recognize they need help with their health.

In January, we are talking with our students about being overall healthy.

Week 1 - Hydration Week
All students are given 1 bottle of water for the week and their job is to monitor their water intake and to focus on keeping their body hydrated. We are challenging K-2 students to drink 1 bottle and Grade 3-5 students to drink 3 bottles of water daily during school. If students are able to drink the daily amount of water for their grade, then they will recieve a hydration ticket at the end of each day. There will be a draw to win a reusable water bottle for each grade level. Did you know that adults should be drinking 2 litres of water every day? water.JPG

Week 2 - Great Kindness Challenge and Yoga Week
Everyone is being challenged to do a purposeful act of kindness every day this week.
Also, each classroom will given yoga passes to join a yoga session during recesses. These sessions will be run by student leaders this week until March. Teachers will also run yoga sessions during the week in their classrooms. We are using "Cosmic Kids Yoga" and "Go Noodle" as our guides.

Week 3 - Exercise Week
We are all going to do a SAM (Stop and Move) workout each day. This is a short series of exercises that will get progressively longer and more difficult by the end of the week. Monday will begin with 2 exercises of 10 repetitions and then 2 exercises will be added each day until Friday, for a total workout of 10 exercises and 10 repetitions for each exercise. Classes will complete a workout daily and possibly even complete an activity from "Go Noodle".

We invite families to join us at home or at work in all of our challenges. Let's be healthy together!
