Principal's Message

TammyBaydock.JPGAs principal of Hedges Middle School, it is a great privilege to able to welcome our students, parents, and guardians to another school year. The school team is ready to work with all our students and provide an experience that will help each individual student grow their academic, social, and personal management skills. Hedges Middle School is a safe, nurturing, and innovative learning community where all students are supported to learn and achieve at high levels. I look forward to meeting all our students and families in the weeks ahead.

Hedges Middle School is ‘home’ to approximately 410 students in grade 6 to 8 and the Fairlane Children’s Centre. We acknowledge that we are on treaty one land, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, and Dakota, Lakota, Dene peoples and homeland of the Metis nation.

Being a Hedges Hawk means that you are part of a learning community that believes in respect and safety to achieve social and academic growth. Throughout the school year we will work with our students to learn these values and provide all students the opportunity to discover the passion to learn, take risks, and experience success.

There are many ways to ensure your child has success at Hedges:

· Ask your child about the positives that happened during their school day

· Parents should take an active role in their child's education – students always have more success when the school and the homework together

· Monitor your child when they are completing homework

· Make sure your child has a good night's rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time

· Regularly check the many Hedges Social Media sites to stay informed on what is happening in the school

· Contact your child's teachers and check the Parent Portal (grade 7 and 8) in PowerSchool to keep up to date on your child's progress

Students are offered many activities to get involved in at Hedges including the SJAHA/WJHA, sports teams, arts (band, choir, artistic mediums, drama, improv) and various clubs. Students can also take part in grade 7 Fall camp, band camp and field trips that develop important peer relationships and extend learning outside of the classroom walls. Parents can be involved at Hedges by volunteering to chaperone on field trips, drive to sporting events or assist at any of the many school activities that we host.

We are looking forward to a great year of learning and growth together!
