I Love to Read
February 2018
The theme for this year’s I Love to Read Month is
Kindness. Students have made ‘kindness’
bookmarks during library classes and these will be uses as we read ‘kindness’
books throughout the month.
There is daily Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.
time) at 8:30 in the morning for 15 minutes.
Everyone in the school is reading!
A calendar of reading activities has been sent home
with each child. Please note the special
days highlighted for the month. These
are:
Ø February
9 --- Assembly day and Pink Shirt Day
o Several
of the students and teachers have ordered Pink Shirts from the Red Cross and
the school is encouraging students to wear pink. Students who have purchased pink shirts or
have their own pink shirts or tops are encouraged to wear these on Friday.
o February
16 --- Dress as a Book Character Day
o February
28 --- Pajama and Stuffy Day
§ The
students will be reading with their various school mates and buddies during
period 4 to create an entire community of reading and love of books.
The school is also implementing an activity which we
have called ‘Battle of the Books’. Each
classroom has been assigned a picture book and they are to praise its good
qualities and then the students all vote as to which book they prefer. Mrs. Biggar has created a wonderful display
in our front foyer if you were curious about which picture books were selected
and how the voting is going.
Teachers will also be trading classrooms and sharing
kindness read-aloud picture books to other students. Everyone enjoys these special little
exchanges.
I Love to Read is always an exciting month. We have had two special V.I.P. readers. Her
Honour The Honourable Lieutenant Governor, Janice Filmon read with Mrs.
Andranistakis’s classroom on February 1st and Shannon Martin, M.L.A.
will be reading with Mrs. MacLean’s class on February 7th.
