April 03, 2024

Hello Golden Gate families,

A total solar eclipse is set to occur on Monday, April 8, 2024, between approximately noon and 3:00 pm Central Standard Time, spanning from Southern Ontario to Newfoundland and Labrador, with the rest of Canada experiencing a partial eclipse. Manitoba will experience an approximate 50 percent occlusion eclipse. The Provincial Government of Manitoba has requested that schools put in place a safety plan to reduce the risk of permanent vision damage for all students.

To ensure student safety, Golden Gate Middle School will be:

· providing an indoor lunch recess with indoor activities planned from 11:45 am-12:45 pm.

· all students in our care must remain at school for lunch and are only able to leave if accompanied by an adult.

· students must bring their lunch to school with them.

· students must be accompanied anytime between 11:45 and 3:00 if needing to leave the school.

· all learning activities will take place indoors throughout the afternoon.

· after-school tryouts and practices will still occur as originally planned.

· end of day dismissal will not be affected. Students will be dismissed at 3:43 pm with regular bus service provided.

Safety information provided to all schools by the province of Manitoba can be viewed at the following link: https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/docs/sector_coms/solar_eclipse.pdf.pdf

This is a tremendous learning opportunity for people of all ages. Classes and community members are encouraged to tune in live and view the solar eclipse through the NASA livestream found at the following link throughout the afternoon of Monday, April 8th, 2024: 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Broadcast (nasa.gov)
