Bus Cancellations

Please be advised that with cold winter weather, there exists the possibility of school buses being cancelled for safety reasons. In the event of extremely cold weather (ambient temperature is equal or colder than -35°C or
a wind chill hazard of -45°C or greater) buses will be cancelled and students will need alternate transportation.

Note: The wind chill is based on a reading taken by Environment Canada at 6:00 a.m. at The Forks.

The School Division will contact all parents via Synrevoice (automated phone messaging), to advise them of bus cancellations. The news media is also alerted to cancellations and Division websites are updated to reflect any announcements. Please find these announcements at the top of our home page. Media information is available on CJOB radio and web at http://www.cjob.com, and at www.sjasd.ca

During inclement weather, the safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. Our decision to keep schools open and/or bus services running is decided in affiliation with our Metro School Divisions and is based on a number of factors.

On any given school day, when the conditions are not favourable due to extreme weather conditions, parents have the option to keep their children at home. The education of our students is a priority but we also want all of our students to be safe at all times. In some circumstances, we recognize there is a need to keep our schools open for those students who are able to make it safely to school and to uphold normal routines for the families in our communities. On storm/snow days, we appreciate the flexibility our staff demonstrates, adjusting their classes accordingly based on the number of students in attendance in each school. We ask parents to always call or email the school if your child is unable to make it to school to ensure we are aware of all absences in the building.

Please ensure that the school is notified if your phone number changes so that we will be able to contact you.

Student Transportation in Public Vehicles

The Board defines any vehicle used to transport students, other than a Division owned or chartered bus, as a private vehicle or "non-owned vehicle".

Although school buses are utilized to transport students on school sponsored activities such as field trips, outdoor education projects or sports activities, occasionally private vehicles are used to transport students to and from such events. Read the complete policy information here.
