Social Media Follow Up

Hello Parents and Guardians,

Many students came to school sharing stories of an incident that occurred last night at the skate park. A couple of students made some poor choices while at the park which prompted a  police response. Thankfully, no one was hurt and it did not involve violence.

Being a public place, students who were at the park took out their phones and either made video recordings or took pictures of the incident. These have been making the rounds on social media and we have been dealing with the fallout here at the school for a good part of the day.

Please take a moment to speak to your child about the appropriate use of their devices, what is good to record and not. It's almost instinctual for many teens/preteens to record every detail of their life, since they have the access and the want to share through social media. We have been telling the students that we make mistakes as we grow and those mistakes should not continue to haunt us once we have made a commitment to being better.

Please take a moment and go through your child's accounts and media to delete any photo or video that shows police interacting with a child. These images or stories can have different impacts on young people depending on their personal histories. For many, the incident or police involvement was a scary episode and was even a trigger for those who have suffered trauma. Please also delete any images from within the school. Students are not allowed to take pictures or videos without consent.

Please remind your child that the school has services to help those who may have been triggered by the stories from yesterday. If a student needs help in contextualizing what they may see or have heard, please remind them they are safe and cared for and review what options they would follow if they were involved in an unsafe event. Contact the school if your child needs any follow up.

Thank you
