Hello Bruce Families!

I hope this email finds you well and enjoying some of this nice weather (finally!)

A couple of weeks ago, Mrs. Cantafio and I had the privilege of listening to the former Chief of Cowesses First Nation, Chief Cadmus Delorme, who was integral in helping find 751 unmarked graves on the former residential school Marieval. His message was of hope and healing and how we may move forward in our reconciliation efforts. As Chief Delorme explained, we (the current living generations) didn’t create residential schools, the 60s scoop and other terribly destructive policies, but we did inherit the outcomes of those practices and have a responsibility towards reconciliation.

Part of our reconciliation efforts included the recognition of Red Dress day from last week. Students in all classes on the 4th worked through activities that addressed the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two spirited individuals.  This week we will continue those efforts and begin tying in the Moosehide campaign that is scheduled for this Thursday to create commitments to stop the violence against women and girls. Activities are planned for each day this week.

This week is also the week of our musical ‘The Son of Pinocchio’. Students have been rehearsing for most of the year to bring you a fantastic show! Tickets are on sale in the front office for $10 each. Evening shows Wednesday and Friday at 7pm.

Please don’t forget that the Spring Choir and Band Concert is coming up on the 25th and is open (and free) for all families to attend. To add the mix, there is an audition call for the Divisional Junior Concert Choir, please see the attached document if interested.

In sports news, Congratulations! to our Bruce Badminton team and coaches for a fabulous season! Boys doubles finished 1st and 3rd, Girls doubles finished 1st and 3rd, Mixed doubles finished 1st and 2nd, and boys singles finished with a second place, all of which lead to Bruce being crowned Divisional Champions! Way to go athletes and coaches!

Track and Field practices begin this week and depending on the events a child wants to enter, they could be practicing before school, at lunch or after school. It is a short season, as the divisional meet will be held at the beginning of June. Another sport also beginning is beach volleyball so please encourage your child to get active.

If your child is interested in learning more about tackle football, the Rods football club have begun registration for the new season. Please see information here if interested.
