The following Message from the Superintendent was sent to caregivers on February 11, 2026.
Dear SJASD families,
It is with heavy hearts that Senior Administrators learned of the tragic mass shooting event on February 10, 2026, at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
As this tremendous loss sets in, we would like to express our heartfelt sympathies to the victims, families, and friends of this horrendous act of violence. It is not possible to put ourselves into the shoes of the many families who are experiencing unimaginable loss, facing the potential for life-changing physical injuries, or staring down the path of recovery from psychological wounds.
As a small and close-knit community in West Winnipeg, we would like to send our deepest condolences to the community of Tumbler Ridge and to the students and staff of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. We stand with you during this devastating time.
We want to remind our students and their families that the safety and security of our students is always our number one priority, and we continue to support ongoing efforts to review and bolster our safety planning. We also continue to prioritize the mental health and wellbeing of all our students through staffing, supports, and programming.
[Below] you will find resources to help guide conversations with your children and support them in processing information and emotions related to these events. Some youth may not show immediate reactions, while others may express fear, sadness, anger, or confusion. You can support your child by:
- Listening calmly if they raise concerns;
- Reassuring them that schools have safety procedures in place;
- Keeping routines as consistent as possible; and
- Encouraging balanced media/social media consumption and thoughtful conversations about what they are seeing online.
If you feel your child(ren) would benefit from additional support, please reach out to your child(ren)'s school. Our staff are here to help and can connect students and families with the appropriate supports if needed. Please take care of yourselves during this difficult time.
Thank you,
Jenness Moffatt, Superintendent/CEO
St. James-Assiniboia School Division
