SJASD is pleased to offer a free, engaging summer literacy program for families with children entering Kindergarten to get a glimpse into the exciting world of play-based learning, right in the comfort of their own home!

Our Program

Literacy Links supports parents in understanding how to develop a fun, play-based learning environment in the home setting and make the important links between home and school. Literacy Links is a virtual program in St. James-Assiniboia School Division that is offered May to August to all families of children entering Kindergarten in the fall. University students are hired and trained to work as Literacy Facilitators.

The Literacy Facilitators will:

  • Contact families and arrange for five or six virtual visits at mutually acceptable times, as well as a final in-person celebration visit.
  • Drop off a home package filled with hands-on, play materials for your child to engage with on the other side of the screen.
  • Demonstrate and provide developmentally appropriate and enriching activities that focus on early literacy and numeracy development including reading using puppets and props to build strong literacy skills, using environmental print and rhyming games as a springboard to reading, and math activities such as patterning, positional language and counting games and that build a strong numeracy foundation.
  • Discuss various feelings your child may have around starting school and build excitement for Kindergarten.
  • Provide a variety of materials that include helpful literacy and numeracy information, activities, games and two free books.
LiteracyLinks_boy_2.jpgThrough the program, find out how:
  • You can better understand your own child's literacy and numeracy development.
  • You can provide a variety of fun, play-based literacy and numeracy activities for your child.
  • You can develop your child's fine motor skills through hands-on materials and games.
  • You can help set up your child for success in school.

Remember, there is no cost to participate in this program. To learn more about how you can be involved in the Literacy Links program, please email us or call (204) 837-5886, extension 2105.

Caregiver Feedback

Literacy Links has been running for over 20 years and has received high praise from parents/guardians. Here is some feedback from past participants:

What an amazing program! The resources and activities provided were fantastic and the facilitator made learning so much fun!"

“The virtual model Literacy Links created was impressive and gave us so many ideas to incorporate learning into our day."

Did You Know That?

  • LiteracyLinks_boy.jpg

The results of a Harvard University study rate the “home reading environment" as the single most important factor affecting literacy development in children.
  • Children who grow up in a good home reading environment are much more likely to be strong and interested readers than children who do not, no matter how much reading is encouraged in school.
  • Current research indicates that school-entry math skills not only predict later literacy skills but also are the strongest predictor of later academic achievement.
  • Research also shows that children with better motor abilities, especially fine motor skills, are more likely to be successful in the areas requiring language, numeracy, and attentional skills.
