DanceScapes began in 2006 as a small scale event showcased in the Westwood Collegiate Theatre with an audience of 100 people. The vision of dance teacher Jennifer Metelski, DanceScapes has evolved into an annual event with performers from Early, Middle and Senior Years schools throughout the Division.
In June 2019, over 800 parents, students and community members filled the prestigious Manitoba Theatre for Young People, to enjoy dynamic performances by students from Stevenson-Britannia Elementary-Director Kristin Kaczmarz, Lincoln Middle School-Director Lindsay Swereda, John Taylor-Director Kathryn Warner and Westwood Collegiate - Director Brian Toms and Lauren Anderson.
DanceScapes is thriving proof that the Manitoba Dance Curriculum is flourishing in St. James-Assiniboia School Division!
"Dance is a vital part of every student's education and contributes to deep and enduring student engagement that leads to learning success. Dance education develops unique, powerful, and multiple ways of perceiving, interpreting, knowing, representing, and communicating understandings about self and the world. Through dance experiences, students have opportunities to think creatively, explore ideas and feelings, and develop emerging personal, cultural, and social identities."
