​​​​​​​​​​Please see below a list of awards offered in St. James-Assiniboia School Division on behalf of contributions made to the St. James-Assiniboia Scholarship Foundation. Awards are categorized by schools and education level. A few awards have been featured in our annual report and are paired with profile write ups to learn more about those specific scholarships. Please note: Award amounts are subject to change.

All High Schools 

New Award:  Resilience Award
This award recognizes a student who demonstrates a positive attitude towards learning and shows perseverance, persistence, and growth despite challenge (physical, emotional, life event) to successfully graduate.
Amount: $500

Winnipeg Airport Authority Queen Elizabeth II Award
This award is presented to a St. James-Assiniboia School Division high school graduate continuing to post-secondary education in an aviation-related field.
Amount: $500
​Schools: This award is available to graduating students from all St James Assiniboia high schools. ​

Penny Mead Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship, created in memory of an educator, is awarded annually to a Grade 12 student pursuing post-secondary education in music.
Amount: $100 at each high school
Location: Collège Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, John Taylor Collegiate, St. James Collegiate and Westwood Collegiate
 
Indigenous Leadership Award
This award is presented annually to a self-identified Indigenous student graduating from any high school in St. James-Assiniboia School Division. The candidate must be pursuing post-secondary education, demonstrate community and volunteer work or extracurricular involvement as well as strength of character and fortitude. Regular attendance may be considered.
Amount: $1,000
School: Applications accepted from all high five schools, one annual recipient is chosen.

Ethan Robert Graham Memorial Award in Vocational Industrial Education
This award is in honour of a former student. The award is presented to a graduating student who is planning to pursue education and a career in a mechanical/technical field, or alternatively, in the field of business.

Ethan Robert Graham Memorial Award in Music Education
This award is in honour of a former student. The award is presented to a graduating student who is planning to pursue post-secondary education in Music.

Jim and Lillian Huggard Memorial Award
This award is presented annually to a graduating student actively involved in community events or school activities over a number of years.
Amount: $500 x 2

Joyce Aitken Award
This award, in honour of a former Mathematics teacher, is presented annually to a graduating student who is the second runner-up to the Governor General’s Award.
Amount: $100

Silver Heights Collegiate 1960’s Alumni Award
This award is presented annually to a deserving Grade 12 student with an average of 70% or better who is not the recipient of another major award, and who demonstrates good citizenship in school and the community with volunteer service being a significant aspect of this service.

Susan Bohonos Memorial Award
The award is presented annually in honour of a former student. The recipient is a graduating student who demonstrates a kind, enthusiastic and positive character with potential for leadership. This candidate is able to overcome challenges and is actively involved in school/ the community and has maintained a 65% average.

Jim and Lillian Huggard Memorial Award
This award is presented annually to a graduating student who is actively involved in community events or school activities over a number of years.
Amount: $500 at each school

Madison-Claven-Enns Memorial Award

This award is presented in memory of a former student. The scholarship recognizes a graduating student who achieves a minimum 70% average, demonstrates a positive attitude toward learning and has overcome a challenge (physical, emotional, life event) to successfully graduate.

Louis Simkulak Award
This award is presented annually to a graduating student who shows the greatest enthusiasm and interest in the “History of Western Civilization” course and who will be continuing with further educational studies.

St. James Collegiate

 
Bill Moir Award
This award is sponsored by a former student. The recipient will have maintained involvement in the Hockey Academy and/or community hockey and/or high school hockey with an academic average of 80%. Hockey should be the major athletic focus but alternatively, team membership in other inter-collegiate sports may be considered. The recipient is a good citizen with post-secondary aspirations.

Captain Gordon Oliver Alexander Memorial Award
Captain G O Alexander was an air transport pilot employed by Canadian Pacific Airlines as a DC-3 Captain.  His life was lost with his crew and passengers in the bombing of Flight 108 near Forestville, Quebec.  This award is sponsored by Bruce Alexander, a graduate of SJCI. The recipient is a graduating student with an average of 80% or better, who does not receive any other major awards. The successful candidate has plans to pursue post-secondary education, paired with a record of service in school and/or the community.

Constance and George Waters Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of an educator and a trustee. The recipient of this scholarship is entering a helping profession, preferably the field of education.

Dr. D. Young Humanitarian Award

This award is presented in honour of a former vice-principal. The recipient is a student at the undergraduate level who exhibits humanitarianism.

Edith and Thomas Cox Memorial Award
This award is presented annually to assist a graduating student in need of financial assistance to pursue post-secondary education. The award is offered by a former St. James Collegiate student, Harry Cox, honouring his parents Edith and Thomas Cox for the support they provided him. He achieved his academic goals with the help of two scholarships he received at graduation and wishes to help other St. James Collegiate graduates do the same.

Eric Jonasson Memorial Scholarship
This award is presented in honour of a former trustee. The recipient is a student who resides in the East Ward of SJASD, as defined in 1998, and is graduating from the Technology Program or Second Start with an above average standing. The successful candidate will have plans to pursue a technology program at a post-secondary institution in Winnipeg.

Jan Ernest Carlson Memorial Award
This award is presented in honour of a boy who resided in East St. James. The recipient is a student planning to pursue the humanities.

Norman E. Lawson Award
The recipient will be recognized for his or her excellence in academic achievement and for the notable contributions he or she has made to the daily life at St. James Collegiate.

Paul Havixbeck Memorial Award
This award is in memory of a former teacher. The annual recipient is an outstanding Grade 12 Mathematics student who is involved in school activities. The successful candidate must graduate with a minimum of a “B” average and have plans to attend a post-secondary institution.

St. James Collegiate Alumni Awards
These awards are presented to three graduating students pursuing post-secondary education at one of the following institutions: Red River College, the University of Manitoba or University of Winnipeg. The successful candidates are actively involved in volunteer activities, have good attendance and citizenship, and high academic standing in Mathematics, English and at least three other Senior 4 courses.  These award recipients cannot be the Governor General medalist or the runner-up.

Tom Dercola Humanities Award
This award is presented annually to a student in Grade 10 or 11 with high academic standing in one or more of the Humanities subjects. The successful candidate also demonstrates good citizenship and is involved in the community.

George Chapman Family Award
This award is funded by George Chapman, QC formerly of the law firm Chapman Goddard Kagan in recognition of the quality of teaching he received in St James schools.  The recipient will demonstrate proficiency in academics and significant involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Westwood Collegiate

 
Anne Simpson Memorial Award
This award is in memory of a community member. The scholarship will be presented each year to a graduating student with the highest average out of two Grade 12 Science courses, a minimum of 40 community service hours and is registered to pursue science at the post-secondary level.

Shannon Ellis Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of a former student. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating Drama student at Westwood Collegiate who is active on the improv team and has at least a mark of 80% in the Drama Major program.

All Middle Years Schools

 
James McLeod Memorial Award
This award is in memory of a former student. The award is presented annually to a Grade 8 band student who demonstrates commitment and dedication to band, as well as a love of music at Lincoln Middle School.

Neil Krebbs Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of a former Spring Valley Junior High student. The award is presented annually to a player who best exemplifies the characteristics Neil displayed as an athlete — excellent skill, sportsmanship and team commitment.  It is presented to a male MVP. The award is presented at the Middle Years Volleyball Final Tournament to a player on the championship team.

O'Neil Coaches Award
The O'Neil Coaches award was developed by Sharon O'Neil. The award is inspired by the commitment and dedication shown by the coaches in St. James- Assiniboia School Division to her two daughters. This annual award is given to a member of the Tier 1 girls championship volleyball team who best exemplifies the characteristics of skill, sportsmanship and team commitment.

All Early Years Schools

 
Julie Larson Memorial Award
This award is in memory of a former teacher. The award is presented to a deserving student to further their study of art or drama by helping to pay the enrollment fee in an appropriate course. Monies could be used for book prizes instead of cash awards if preferred.
Amount: $50 per school, can be awarded to two students at $25
School: Stevenson-Britannia School, Linwood School and Bruce Middle School
 
Ms. Willows Book Award
This award is in memory of a former teacher at Crestview School. Each year, all students at Crestview School receive a book of their choosing based on their interest and reading level during “I Love to Read Month.”

Shirley Agnes Tyrrell Award
This award is in memory of a parent at Buchanan School. It is presented annually to a Grade 5 student, selected by Grade 5 teachers and the principal, who shows the best effort in work ethic, conviction and overall citizenship.
Amount: $500 for a bike
