What is AP?

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) encourages students to pursue University Level studies with the opportunity to earn University credit while still in High School. AP provides opportunities for motivated and prepared students to experience college-level courses while in high school, thereby fostering critical thinking and college persistence and success. AP shows universities that the student can handle first-year coursework is well prepared to succeed in post-secondary study. Over 4,000 universities in more than 60 countries use AP Exam scores for admission and course credits. AP courses are introductory-level university experiences, based on a learner-centric, rigorous methodology and research confirms that AP students are more likely to be successful in university.

Students have the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the subjects that interest them with the AP course. Students are empowered to choose a path in their areas of passion, which further highlighting their strengths to universities. They can either specialize in a specific area or take a more generalist approach in selecting course combinations. The most significant advantage of the AP program is its modularity and accessibility. Since AP is often conducted on a class-by-class basis, students may be better able to balance their courses with life outside school.

AP courses give students access to rigorous University level work but with the support of their High School teachers.  Students build confidence and learn the essential time management and study skills that will assist them in their post-secondary studies. In addition, students have the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the subjects that interest them and develop their research and communication skills.
