The SJASD Graduation Powwow will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Collège Sturgeon Heights Collegiate.
This annual event celebrates Indigenous grads from across the Division.
April Waters is the Administrator of Indigenous Education & Community Support.
“The Grad Powwow is a meaningful celebration that honours the achievements, strength, and journeys of our graduating Indigenous students. It's also a ton of fun! Attending the powwow is an opportunity to celebrate student success, learn about Indigenous cultural practices, and show collective support for graduates as they transition into their next chapter," she says.
Festivities begin with at a pipe ceremony at 4 p.m. led by SJASD Knowledge Keeper North Star. Culinary Arts program students from Collège Sturgeon Heights Collegiate will prepare a community feast, which begins at 4:30 p.m.
Grand Entry will take place at 5:15 p.m. The procession will include honoured guests, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers. It will also include traditional drumming and singing, followed by powwow dancers and SJASD grads.
Members of Senior Administration will address attendees, and students will be individually recognized.

“Attendees will have an opportunity to view Indigenous artwork from our students and shop at our Indigenous marketplace," explains April.
