The St. James-Assiniboia School Division is excited to share that the Manitoba government is introducing free Youth Transit Passes for Grade 6–12 students through a pilot partnership with the City of Winnipeg.
This pilot contributes to affordability, supports student access to school, work, and recreational opportunities, and encourages lifelong transit ridership.
School staff will distribute Youth Transit Passes to students over the next month according to the following staggered schedule as directed by the City of Winnipeg:
- Grades 11–12: Sept. 8–18
- Grades 9–10: Sept. 21–25
- Grades 6–8: Sept. 28–Oct. 2 (Grade 6 students aged 12 or older)
SJASD requires caregivers to provide consent for EACH child BEFORE a transit pass can be issued. To avoid delays, SJASD strongly encourages caregivers to provide consent as soon as possible via the following online form:

Families who are unable to access the online form may provide consent by contacting their child's school directly.
If a pass is required by a student before their grade's scheduled distribution date, please contact your school's administration so that arrangements can be made.
Additional Transit Pass Details
- Passes are valid for one year and will expire on Aug. 31, 2027.
- Students in Grades 10 to 12 are encouraged to carry their student identification card with them when using their transit pass.
- Passes issued to students are not transferable and are for the student's use only.
- We ask that caregivers speak to their children about keeping their pass safe and ensuring that it is not lost, damaged, or shared with others.
- As per current Winnipeg Transit policy, children aged 11 and under may ride free when accompanied by a fare-paying customer.
