Our congratulations and admiration go out to Jewel Casselman, Music teacher at Lakewood School in St. James-Assiniboia School Division, for being one of five teachers nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award by MusiCounts.

“Providing music to students in school gives them the tools to be more creative, helps with their numeracy and literacy, and improves their own mental health and social well being," said Casselman. “They learn to work in a cooperative manner, sharing ideas, listening to, and providing feedback from their peers. They learn to be social beings and work together as a group towards a common goal or outcome. They learn to help each other out when they are struggling. The students are learning a form of self-expression that they can take into other subjects in the classroom. Music builds self-confidence, and helps students become more resilient.  Creating music in the classroom allows students to express themselves freely."
