As a trustee, I am frequently asked, “What does a trustee do?"
Trustees are democratically elected to represent their local communities. They are part of a team. No individual trustee can make decisions, or has authority to act on behalf of the board. Together, we identify the needs and priorities of SJASD. Trustees often consider conflicting interests and values while developing policies that are in the best interest of all students, then ensure that they are implemented effectively. The Superintendent and senior admin team are entrusted with the day-to-day operations of the division.
One of my favourite analogies is that of a dance. When you're in the middle of the dance floor (where I like to be), you may think that everyone is having a great time because you're only seeing those nearest to you. A trustee's job is to stand in the balcony and observe. To ask questions like: Who is not dancing? Why not? Why did some not attend?
These are the questions we must ask, as it is our responsibility to serve all students. Trustees work to ensure equity across the division so that each student can succeed regardless of background, identity, or personal circumstances. It's our job to bring all voices to the board table.
One of the highlights of being a trustee is watching students share their gifts and talents. I encourage everyone to engage with our school communities. This December, cheer on your favourite hockey, indoor soccer, or basketball team. Listen to the beautiful sounds of our divisional choirs. Take in a musical. Experience the celebrations of a variety of cultures at one of the many Winter Concerts.
Most importantly, don't hesitate to speak to a trustee at one of these events. We are here to represent our community and appreciate any opportunity to connect with you directly.
