SJASD Physical Education is delivering Water Safety Sessions to Newcomer families in the Division.
The classroom sessions introduce families to being safe around water. They will not take place in the water. They are open to Newcomer families with children attending SJASD in Grades 4 to 12.
“These sessions are designed to increase Newcomer knowledge of water safety concerns and risks around waterways such as lakes, beaches and pools, and what they can do to stay safe," says J.J. Ross, Physical Education and Health Education Coordinator for SJASD. “Research has shown that Newcomers are at a higher risk of drowning, so we really want to target this group in a proactive way."
While SJASD runs a Grade 3 Swim Program across the Division, these sessions are funded through a grant from the Manitoba Coalition for Safer Waters.
“Our instructors attended a comprehensive two-day training session with the Lifesaving Society in order to deliver the latest critical water safety information to our growing Newcomer population," he says.
Sessions are completely free. Each session will have the same information. Newcomers are encouraged to sign up and bring their entire families. Snacks will be provided. Space is limited.
