Convocation 2024: Congratulations to All of SJASD's Graduates

Last week, approximately 653 students graduated from SJASD. Parents, guardians and staff gathered for convocation ceremonies that marked this important milestone. Below is a snapshot of some of the week's festivities.

Thanks to staff member and volunteers for organizing these fantastic events. 

John Taylor Collegiate

John Taylor Collegiate students participated in the 60th Graduate Ceremony on Wednesday, June 26 at the Manitoba Theatre Centre. Over 100 grads heard from SJASD Board Vice Chair Sandy Lethbridge. The JT Grad Choir sang “Found/Tonight." Luisa David and Precious Umali provided the Valedictorian address and Principal Walt Lipinski also delivered a speech. Superintendent Jenness Moffatt also attended to recognize grads and distribute awards. Vice Principals Lori Edwards and Joan MacCutcheon presided as Emcees.

Westwood Collegiate

On Wednesday, June 26, over 1,000 Westwood Collegiate grads, their families and community members gathered at the Centennial Concert Hall to participate in a morning graduation ceremony. Graduates were serenated by the Westwood Band and Grad Choir. Director of Curriculum, Assessment and Professional Learning Sandra Melo brought greetings from Senior Administration, while Trustee Fiona Shiells and Kevin Dueck addressed the audience on behalf of the School Board and school administration respectively. Student Mia Fletcher provided the Valedictorian address. Diplomas were presented to over 150 graduates. Teacher Gary Fewer and Vice Principal Barry Wiess chaired the proceedings.

Collège Sturgeon Heights Collegiate

Over 280 graduates packed into the RBC Convention Centre for Convocation 2024 on Thursday, June 27. After “In the Heights" vocal ensemble performed an arrangement of O'Canada, attendees heard from Trustee Michael Cabral, Assistant Superintendent of Education and Administration Jordana Buckwold, and Principal George Valentim. The Valedictorian address/Allocution des finissants were provided by Dawn Banting and William Spencler. “In the Heights" and Choir Grads performed “Home" with percussion provided by William Spencler.

St. James Collegiate Institute

St. James Collegiate Institute held their graduate ceremony on Wednesday, June 28 at the Victoria Inn. Approximately 90 grads filed into the conference room. Knowledge Keeper North Star performed the Honour Song, while John Lloyd De Leon sang O'Canada. Chair Holly Hunter brought greetings from the School Board. Principal Lorelei Steffler provided a speech and Director of Inclusion Support Services Potoula Locken represented the Superintendent's Department. Valedictorian John Lloyd De Leon addressed the crowd. The Grad Choir performed “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by Green Day. Finally, Grade 12 student Julianna Cases passed the torch to Grade 11 student Ashela Lual.

Jameswood Alternative School

Approximately 16 Jameswood graduates rose to accept their diplomas at the school on Tuesday, June 25. Trustee Angela Dunn brought greetings from the Board, while Superintendent Jenness Moffatt and Principal Stacy Kent delivered speeches. After the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a catered lunch.
