As we move through 2026, much of the conversation around the workforce focuses on change, new skills, evolving industries, and growing expectations. What often goes unnoticed is where that preparation is already happening: in our schools.
In the St. James-Assiniboia School Division,
Career Development has become a meaningful part of the student experience. It's no longer limited to Guidance meetings or course planning. Instead, it is a continuous process that begins early and builds throughout a student's education—helping them better understand their interests, strengths, and future opportunities.
At the core of this work is a structured approach that focuses on several key priorities. These include supporting
career-focused classroom programming, helping students develop
employability skills and explore different
career pathways, and coordinating
real-world work experiences. There is also a strong emphasis on
building relationships with community and industry partners, ensuring that learning environments reflect real workplace expectations—especially around safety—and advancing Division-wide initiatives that connect students to future opportunities.
By the time students reach high school, they are not starting from scratch. They've already been introduced to different possibilities and begin connecting what they learn in the classroom to real-world outcomes. Through hands-on experiences, career exploration opportunities, and exposure to local industries, students gain a clearer sense of what lies ahead.
Equally important is the focus on
essential skills. Communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability are integrated into learning in practical ways. These are skills that will support students not only in their first job, but throughout their lives.
Access is another critical piece. Not every student has the same opportunities outside of school to explore careers or build networks. Schools help bridge that gap by creating meaningful experiences that allow all students to see a future that feels within reach.
Preparing students for the future isn't about predicting a single path. It's about giving them the tools and confidence to navigate many. In St. James-Assiniboia, that work is already happening every day in our classrooms.
