Newcomer Orientation to St. James Centennial Pool

Location: St. James Assiniboia Centennial Pool, 644 Parkdale Street
Description: A free hands-on orientation to the St. James Centennial Pool followed by a swim to get comfortable with the pool environment.
“These sessions are designed to increase Newcomer knowledge of water safety concerns and risks around waterways such as lakes, beaches and pools, and what they can do to stay safe," says J.J. Ross, Physical Education and Health Education Coordinator for SJASD. “Research has shown that Newcomers are at a higher risk of drowning, so we want to continue targeting this group in a proactive way."
This is the third year that SJASD has offered water safety sessions to Newcomers. These sessions are funded through a grant from the Manitoba Coalition for Safer Waters. SJASD also runs a Grade 3 Swim Program across the Division.
Newcomers are encouraged to sign up and bring their entire families. Dryland (classroom) sessions are geared to Newcomer families with children attending SJASD in Grades 4 to 12.
