Arts Education nurtures creativity, strengthens problem-solving skills, and supports social and emotional learning. It also fosters self-reliance, leadership, and a sense of community. Most importantly, it brings students joy and has a profound impact on their overall well-being.
In SJASD, the Arts are thriving in every school. From elementary music programs and Orff clubs to choir, band, and fine arts programs in Middle and Senior Years, students have countless opportunities to explore their artistic talents. Drama and dance programs further enrich the Division.
One of the great privileges of being a Trustee is attending many concerts and performances throughout the year. I take every opportunity I can to enjoy a school concert or experience one of our high schools' award-winning musicals and plays.
Today, I want to highlight two exceptional programs unique to SJASD: the Divisional Choirs and the Divisional Musical. As a parent of a child involved in both, I've had the opportunity to witness first-hand the magic these programs create for our students.
Divisional Choirs are offered at three levels: the Children's Concert Choir, the Junior Concert Choir, and the Senior Concert Choir, welcoming students from Grades 4 to 12. Rehearsals take place weekly, and students showcase their talents at various concerts and festivals throughout the year.
The Divisional Musical is open to students from Grades 4 to 8. Each year, up to 180 students come together from across the Division to form two casts, rehearsing from September to January before delivering an unforgettable performance at semester break. Director Paula Olko wears many hats—choreographer, costume designer, music director, and set designer—bringing each production to life with extraordinary creativity and dedication.
My daughter, Rowan, describes her experience beautifully:
"It's a community. No matter whether we're dancing or singing, we're always in it together. It's a very supportive group, and we're always having a good time."
If your child is interested in joining one of these Divisional programs, stay tuned for audition information in the spring. Music teachers at each school are always happy to help guide families through the application process.
The Arts play a vital role in shaping well-rounded, confident, and creative students. Whether through music, drama, dance, or visual arts, these programs provide opportunities for self-expression, collaboration, and personal growth. I encourage all families to explore SJASD's rich and diverse Arts Education programming and support their children in discovering the joy of the Arts.
